Why You Should be in Guntersville this Weekend in June
Summers in the South are all fun all the time. The weather is great, the vibes are happy and the events are plentiful. One weekend in particular is a great time to visit the Lake Guntersville area, because it is time for Guntersville Lake HydroFest! Boats racing at speeds of up to 200 mph zoom past only one weekend in Alabama and that is June 6 through 8. Tickets are on sale now, so what are you waiting for?
Best Family Vacation Weekend in the Southeast
Lake Guntersville offers a sweet hometown feel with plenty of summer fun for families and one of the top events in the country to kick it all off. HydroFest rolls into the small town at the base of the Appalachians the first weekend in June bringing boats of all sizes and shapes – from small stock outboards to sleek hydroplanes to the F200 tunnels reminiscent of the space shuttle that sits just up the road in Huntsville’s Space and Rocket Center.
The event itself is perfect for children of all ages and can be enjoyed under the shade trees of the city’s park that runs along Sunset Drive for just $15 a day for adults and $10 for children over age 5. The paved walkway makes traversing the park easy for strollers or wagons and soft shell coolers are allowed through the gates, which means parents can pack the snacks and necessities to keep their little ones happy.
A kid’s zone featuring waterslides for both older and younger children keeps the kids cool as the sun heats up and this year, carnival games add to the festival fun.
Choose from cabins on the water to Hotel Suites
At the end of the day, when everyone is tired and ready to find a little air conditioning, just hop on the buses provided and allow someone else to drive you and the kiddos back to your car. From there, home for the weekend could be a cabin on the water or a treehouse in woods, or even a hotel with a pool and free breakfast. Lake Guntersville offers all of these and more and for a price that won’t cause heartburn. The newest hotel, Home2Suites, located at City Harbor offers large rooms that look out at the lake with conveniences like microwaves and small refrigerators as well as a fabulous pool. A quick walk along the boardwalk and you can grab burgers, yummy ice cream or catch some live music while the kids race around.
Extend Your Stay and Experience Caverns, Waterparks, and Space
Stretch your weekend by coming in on Thursday or staying over to Monday and enjoy Sand Mountain Park’s waterslides, lazy river and playgrounds. Day passes are available. Or, go underground at Cathedral Caverns to experience one of Alabama’s most amazing state parks. Then, on your way out of town, stop at Huntsville’s Space and Rocket Center and see an actual moonrock. Your kids will have a blast exploring all Lake Guntersville has to offer and you will too. Let’s face it – boat racing, ice cream and sunsets over the lake – what’s not to love?
